Cultures of Resistance

The book Deep Green Resistance studies the American Civil Rights Movement, the British Women’s Social and Political Union, and the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta. All these “cultures of resistance” provide loyal support for their members, so they may do the difficult work of demanding social and political change. I’ve looked into a few other such cultures and offer them here: An excellent example is the diverse resistance put up by many ethnic minorities to Burma’s military dictatorship. The State Law and Restoration Council (SLORC), a military junta of General Ne Win, took control of Burma in 1962 and renamed it Myanmar. Already troubled by decades of British colonialism and a 1942 Japanese invasion, Burma’s diverse peoples—Rohingya, Karen, Padaung, Mons, Kachins, Akha, many more—were subjected to enslavement, rape, forced prostitution, all the usual manner of violence committed by the powerful against the powerless. ...

Strategy to Save the Planet

“Building a culture of resistance” is a large undertaking, but necessary to achieving the political activism that the planet needs. A culture of resistance is a dedicated alliance of people and their affiliates that together work for long-term social change. The book, Deep Green Resistance: Strategy to Save the Planet, describes several such cultures, from the American Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s to the British Women’s Social and Political Union of the early 1900s, to the contemporary Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta and the many Arab Spring protesters. Cultures of resistance provide material, spiritual, emotional and psychological support for their members. ...

What you can do: organize and resist.

As Gas Drilling Spreads, Towns Stand Ground Over Control SOUTH FAYETTE, Pa. — As energy companies move to drill in densely populated areas from Pennsylvania to Texas, battles are breaking out over who will have the final say in managing the shale gas boom. From Derrick Jensen's book Dreams:

“Frankly I’m starting to remind myself of some of the pacifists who’ve ‘communicated’ with me. It always goes the same. They tell me that ‘resistance is never possible, so when you say “organize and resist” what do you mean? I’m already riding my bike and composting. What do you want us to do?’ Then when I point out to them many successful resistance movements, they say, ‘But resistance is never possible, what do you want us to do?’ When I point out that they should begin organizing, naming power structures for what they are, and dismantling those systems of power, and when I point out that this is what many successful resistance movements have done, they say, ‘But resistance is never possible. What do you want us to do?’” (Page 545.)
